Champions of Progress: Lending a Hand

Helping our friends and neighbors during times of need is at the core of what we do here at Westfield. We’re also committed to improving the safety and stability of the communities around us. As a result, we’ve identified key areas for giving, including family stability, disaster recovery and safety.

We’ve endowed a private foundation that reflects Westfield’s desire to support communities and impact those areas that align with our objectives. Take a moment to see how the nonprofit organizations we support can make a difference when people encounter hardships:

It Takes Guts

Every day, business owners are faced with a multitude of challenges. Likewise, nonprofit organizations we support help their clients tackle obstacles and show them the light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Families: We’re devoted to nonprofit organizations who help families push through troubled times, guiding them to a better place and a brighter future.
  • Disaster Recovery: We offer support to our friends and neighbors displaced by disaster.  Understanding that recovery takes months or years, we can help by providing physical and financial assistance to help them on their road to recovery.
  • Safety: We invest in safety measures for businesses and communities, focusing on the prevention of injuries and loss of life or property.

Engaging Our Agents

Our independent Westfield agents share in our legacy of caring, working hard for customers and remaining active participants in their communities. Each year we invite key agents to nominate deserving nonprofits that support family stability, disaster recovery, safety and insurance pathways in their hometowns. Consequently, the program allows us to donate more than $500,000 to neighborhoods across the country. It’s also not uncommon to see Westfield-affiliated independent agencies partners volunteering alongside us in their communities.

Our Hometown

We don’t take for granted that our 176-year-old story is rooted in the farmland of Northeast Ohio. Though our company and people reach across the U.S., a significant portion of our giving remains in this region.

A Booming Region

Have you heard about Cleveland, Akron and other cities and suburbs in Northeast Ohio lately? We’re booming! No, we don’t take credit for it, but we do take pride in how we’ve invested in our neighbors, such as contributing to Cleveland’s Playhouse Square, arguably the finest theater district west of Broadway, and a major economic driver for the city. Our longtime membership in organizations like Cleveland+, The Fund for Our Economic Future and Greater Cleveland Partnership – to name a few – shows our commitment to this region.

New Opportunities

Westfield has invested in a variety of projects and programs that encourage job seekers, career changers and non-traditional students to check out our industry. Through scholarships and campus visits, we’ve tapped into many universities across the country. We also work with our nonprofit partners to raise awareness about opportunities in the insurance industry.

Building a Better World

In an effort to “give back,” our employees spend time each week volunteering for nonprofits. Last year, Westfield volunteered more than 3,000 hours on company time. Here are some highlights of our accomplishments:

  • Built and rehabilitated eight homes in three states
  • Sorted and distributed more than 100,000 meals
  • Planted 300 trees
  • Taught financial literacy and work readiness in 13 classrooms
  • Assisted with a resource fair for more than 600 military veterans

More than Money

Typically, when companies talk about their philanthropic efforts, they lead with a dollar figure—the amount of money they contributed to charitable organizations. To be sure, we’re very proud of having donated more than $3 million last year to worthy causes. But we saved this detail until the end because for us, it’s about so much more than the money. It’s about placing leaders on boards or providing gently used office furniture. It’s engaging our employees through volunteer activities and donation drives for basic needs like food, school supplies and clothing. Most of all, it’s about being a good citizen.

Personal Passion Pays Off

In a show of support for our people, we award donations of $250 - $500 to nonprofits where Westfield employees volunteer on their personal time at least 25 hours per year. To celebrate our 175th anniversary, in 2023 we launched Day to Give Back – an additional paid day for employees to give back to their community by volunteering at a nonprofit of their choice or performing acts of kindness. We also match dollar-for-dollar employee contributions to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, United Way and local food banks—causes they care about most.

Nonprofit Feedback

Many thanks for your interest. We’re proud of the support we provide to key nonprofits and their devotion to our communities. Because we’re committed to seeing the specific impact of our donations, the application process is by invitation only. This allows us to identify nonprofits in our priority areas of interest:  family stability, disaster recovery and safety.
